FROM THE DAVIS ENTERPRISE
Cecilia Escamilla-Greenwald filed candidacy papers for the Davis school board with the Yolo County Elections Office on July 17.
Escamilla-Greenwald is seeking the seat representing Trustee Area 5, which covers El Macero (and some other portions of South Davis) as well as the core area of the UC Davis campus. The Trustee Area Five seat is currently held by incumbent Bob Poppenga, who has indicated he does not intend to seek another term.
“I am running to ensure that all children receive a high-quality education,” said Escamilla-Greenwald, who is a long-time advocate for children’s programs such as Head Start, foster care, and special needs programs. “During these challenging times, it’s imperative that we continue to provide adequate funding and resources to our schools, so that teachers have the tools they need to help all children thrive.”
Escamilla-Greenwald has served on two of the school district’s Strategic Planning Committees and has worked with parents to provide input and feedback on the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP).
Escamilla-Greenwald’s experience also includes previously serving on the Recreation and Parks Commission and currently serving on the Police Accountability Commission (PAC).
At the county level, she served as chair and vice-chair of the Head Start Policy Council.
As a foster/adopt parent, Escamilla-Greenwald spoke before the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services and the First 5 Commission to advocate protecting funding for critical programs that help foster children.
She said her years of experience collaborating with parents and advocating for underprivileged children, coupled with years of service on various boards and commissions will make her a strong advocate for children’s education in Davis.
The filing period for Davis school board candidates continues through Aug. 7. Three seats are at stake in the Nov. 4 election:
* Trustee Area 2, currently represented by trustee Alan Fernandes. Lea Darrah has filed candidacy papers for Trustee Area Two. This is a four-year term.

* The at-large seat formerly held by trustee Cindy Pickett. Vigdis Asmundson has filed candidacy papers for seat, which has two years remaining on the term.
